If you are a reader of The Panama Good Times, there is an excellent chance that you fall into the demographic of people who like to live fully and really enjoy food. Many of us these days are eating healthier and try to consume beneficial and nutritious foods. At the same time, however, we also really like to enjoy our meals and don’t want to sacrifice too much with taste and flavor. This month’s column will try to address these issues with some tasty tips for you to follow up on to prepare fully satisfying and healthy meals.
To start I’m going to cover the topic of “substitution”, that means switching a couple of items in popular dishes to make them a bit healthier while not sacrificing a bit on taste and satisfaction. The first meal we’re going to tackle is pasta, an easy to prepare and very popular dish with hundreds of recipes available. Our switch is going to involve using spaghetti squash in place of pasta. Spaghetti squash has got some great nutritional benefits and avoids many of the downsides associated with pasta, if prepared correctly it has a very similar texture that can often trick your mind into thinking you are actually consuming pasta. There are some great videos online that will show you how to make spaghetti squash and some great recipes. One of my favorites is spaghetti squash and shrimp scampi… delicious!!!
The second switch I often utilize is trading mashed potatoes for mashed cauliflower. Very similar to the pasta substitute, cauliflower is more nutritious than white potatoes and better for your waistline. Great recipes for mashed cauliflower are also available online with a quick search. One of my favorites is Garlic Mashed Cauliflower, the taste is fantastic, and texture is just like regular mashed potatoes.
Give these two dishes a try and let me know what you think. Does anyone have any suggestions for other good substitutes? If so, please email me and I’ll share the best submissions with everyone in a future column. Bon Appetit!
