During Seatrade Cruise Global, the main executives of the cruise industry have betted that the barrier of 30 million cruise passengers will be overcome in 2019. During the meeting, presidents and CEOs of Royal Caribbean, Carnival Corporation, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Clia, agreed that the cruise industry is experiencing a golden age, both in passenger volume, new destinations and technological innovations.
In 2018 there were 28.5 million passengers, an increase of 6.7% over the previous year. This year, it is expected to comfortably exceed 30 million passengers, they said. According to the president of Clia, Kelly Craighead, in 2018 cruise ships had an economic impact of 122,500 million euros, volume that will continue to grow thanks to the arrival of new boats. According to Richard Fein, president of Royal Caribbean, his company has 800 different destinations for its cruises, because, "it's all about the people," he said. On the other hand, for Arnold Donald, president of Carnival, the experience of passengers has improved thanks to the use of new technologies, which allows to personalize the trips and their stays on board.
Regarding the environmental actions that the cruise companies have been developed to contribute in the reduction of fuel consumption. Due to the incorporation of new propulsion fuels such as liquefied natural gas and biogas, the cruise industry expects a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, Craighead said. "Nobody wants to sail in polluted seas or wants to go to a place where they cannot breathe pure air," said Donald, who also mentioned that his company has reduced fuel consumption by 33% in the last decade.
